13 September 2012 – Bush’s Oak – a hybrid

Today while looking for oaks with acorns along South Road. I stumbled on to a hybrid oak that I have identified as Bush’s Oak (Quercus ×bushii Sarg. It is a cross between a Blackjack Oak (Quercus marilandica) and a Black Oak (Quercus velutina). The leaves are the same basic shape as the Blackjack Oak, but the margins are highly variable. A few leaves have fairly deep sinuses, while some are mostly entire along the lateral edges. Most of the leaves are somewhere in between. The other parts of the tree check out as being intermediate between the two species. Anyway, I am about 99.9% sure of the identification, but one can never be 100% sure of hybrid oaks.
