Its accepted scientific name is <em>Rubus flagellaris<\/em> Willd. It is native to eastern North America from the Atlantic Coast on the east to Ontario, Minnesota, and Texas on the west. Botanists call it a liana, or a woody vine that does not support its own weight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.botanybill.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Image2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-3190 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.botanybill.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Image2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Image2\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.botanybill.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Image2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.botanybill.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Image2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.botanybill.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Image2.jpg 1650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the distinguishing traits for this <em>dewberry<\/em> are the stout-based, usually recurved prickles on the stems. It is also distinguished from other trailing species of <em>Rubus<\/em> or <strong>dewberries<\/strong> by its few-flowered inflorescences with ascending pedicels (flowering stems) and glabrous to sparsely pubescent leaves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.botanybill.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC0649.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-3189 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.botanybill.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC0649-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"_DSC0649\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.botanybill.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC0649-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.botanybill.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DSC0649-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIt generally prefers drier or mesic habitats and open sunny locations, but can sometimes be found in wet habitats.\u00a0 It can be seen on the refuge in open ranges and old fields.
